Edmonton was an independent township supporting a sugar mill, but is now a suburb of Cairns.
Edmonton is located approximately 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) south of the centre of Cairns. The Bruce Highway passes from south to north through the centre of the suburb and the North Coast railway line passes from south to north through Edmonton parallel and to the east of the highway. The suburb is served by two railway stations, Edmonton and Queerah (a former neighbourhood name), while a cane tramway network delivers harvested sugarcane to the Mulgrave Sugar Mill at Gordonvale.
Edmonton is home to a mid-sized water park/recreation area named Sugarworld. The park includes some relics from the city's sugar cane mill.
